Der us-amerikanische Künstler, Aids–Aktivist und ‚Visual Aids‚ – Mitglied Hunter Reynolds (1959 – 2022) verlieh in seinem alter ego ‘Patina du Prey’ und ihren Kleidern und Performances seit Anfang der 1990er den Gefühlen und Verlusten der Menschen mit HIV und Aids Ausdruck.
Bekannt wurde Hunter Reynolds, der früh Mitglied von ACT UP wurde und 1989 Art Positive mit gründete, u.a. mit seiner Kunstfigur ‘Patina du Prey’ und seinen Performances (u.a. Memorial Dress).
In seinem alter ego ‘Patina du Prey’ und ihren Kleidern und Performances verlieh Reynolds, der selbst seit 1984 Jahren von seiner HIV-Infektion wusste, seit Anfang der 1990er den Gefühlen und Verlusten der Menschen mit HIV und Aids Ausdruck.
„Patina was born on october 21, 1989. I was documenting the feminization of my male face—putting on makeup and taking pictures, which I had never done before. I wanted to address negative feelings that many male queers have against trans and gender-fluid people.“

Sein ‘Memorial Dress’ (1993) z.B. besteht aus schwarzer Seide – bedruckt mit den Namen von 25.000 an den Folgen von Aids Verstorbenen:
„In 1993, I moved to Berlin for a residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, leaving everything. I didn’t know if I would be alive in two years or not. Those years were some of the worst of the epidemic. Thousands of people died just before the AIDS cocktail came out. As part of my first European performance I wanted to do a reading of names of people who had died due to complications with AIDS. I went to Washington, DC, to see the largest display of the NAMES quilt, got the catalogue, and did the first performance on one of my hospital bed pieces. That led to ‚Memorial Dress.‘ Frank Wagner curated the first major European art exhibition about AIDS, and he and I decided to produce a dress with all the names from my reading. I transcribed 26,000 names, printed them out, and pasted each one to create a silk screen.“
“Eine Travestie der Trauer, Symbol des grenzenlosen Leids angesichts der von diesem grauenhaften Gesundheits-Desaster vernichteten Menschen”, beschrieb Frank Wagner (NGBK) 1993 die erste ‘Memorial Dress’ – Performance in der NGBK Berlin.
Trauer, Verlust, Angst, Hoffnung – ‘Patina du Prey’ verlieh ihnen Ausdruck, Gestalt.
Reynolds, am 30. Juli 1959 in Rochester geboren, lebte in den 1990er Jahren lange Zeit in Berlin (u.a. Künstlerhaus Bethanien, als Stipendiat der Aids-Stiftung). In dieser Zeit hatte er zahlreiche Ausstellungen und Performances, u.a. in Berlin (NGBK), Köln, Hamburg, Polen, Niederlande.
Ende der 90er kehrte Reynolds zurück nach New York, wo er weiter als Künstler arbeitete.
Am 12. Juni 2022 starb Hunter Reynolds in New York.
Hunter Reynolds 2009 zurück in Berlin
Der Künstler und Aids-Aktivist Hunter Reynolds war nach langer Zeit 2009 für kurze Zeit wieder zurück in Berlin – und mit einem Werk in einer Gruppenausstellung zusehen.
Für einige Tage kehrte Reynolds 2009 nach Berlin zurück, um hier seinen 50. Geburtstag zu feiern. Ein Werk von ihm war seinerzeit in einer Ausstellung in der Galerie Rupert Goldsworthy zu sehen.
